Grow Your Own – Lemongrass
Lemongrass is such a versatile plant and really easy to grow. It is a lovely, citrus-scented herb from the grass family – it has a very pleasing lemon scent, and cooking with it offers none of the bitterness of the actual lemon. It is versatile in both sweet and savoury dishes, as well as spicy or mild.
When planting, make sure you leave plenty of room around it, as it thrives well in southwest France due to the abundant sunshine and well-drained soil.
Cooking – If you don’t want to actually eat the lemongrass stalks (most people don’t) it can be used as an aromatic in soups and curries. Also, try laying crushed lemongrass stems on the tray under roasted meats. For more super lemongrass recipes check out the BBC Good Food website.
Lemongrass has many uses apart from cooking.
- Aromatherapy: Its refreshing citrus scent makes lemongrass a popular choice for essential oils, which can be used in diffusers or added to bath products to promote relaxation and enhance mood.
- Tea: Lemongrass makes a soothing tea brewed for its calming effects and pleasant flavour.
- Herbal Remedies: Traditionally, lemongrass has been used in herbal medicine for its potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It’s believed to help with digestion, reduce anxiety, and even serve as a natural insect repellent.
- Skin Care: Due to its antiseptic properties, lemongrass is sometimes incorporated into skincare products. It can help with acne and oily skin, as well as in natural deodorants.
- Cleaning Products: Lemongrass oil is often included in natural cleaning products due to its antibacterial properties and refreshing scent.
As for health benefits, lemongrass is rich in antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress in the body. It’s also believed to aid digestion, support detoxification, and may provide relief from headaches and cold symptoms. However, you should always consult with a healthcare provider before using it for medicinal purposes.
